Afghan charged over Munich car attack that killed mother and infant

German prosecutors said Tuesday they have charged an Afghan man over a Munich car-ramming attack that killed a two-year-old girl and her mother and wounded dozens more.
The man, identified only as Farhad N., was charged with two counts of murder, 44 counts of attempted murder, bodily harm, aggravated assault and road traffic violations.
"The accused committed the deed out of zealous religious motivation," prosecutors alleged about the attack on February 13, the eve of an international security conference in the Bavarian state capital.
"He believed himself obliged, in response to the suffering of Muslims in Islamic countries, to attack and kill randomly selected individuals in Germany," they added.
An AFP reporter saw shoes, glasses and an infant stroller strewn across the street after a Mini Cooper barrelled into a trade union demonstration.
Farhad N. was arrested at the scene after police fired a shot at the battered car before detaining the driver.
Der Spiegel magazine reported that Farhad N. was 24 at the time of the attack and had been refused asylum after coming to Germany in 2016, though he was allowed to remain in the country.
Bild daily gave the man's name as Farhad Noori and said his social media accounts often featured posts of Islamic texts and music.
The attack came less than two weeks before a national election saw the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD) party achieve their best ever result of over 20 percent.
A series of attacks blamed on migrants has also included a car ramming at a Christmas market in the eastern city of Magdeburg in December that killed six people and injured over 300.
