Hang Seng Index commenced trading with modest gains but subsequently declined

9th October 2025 - (Hong Kong) Hong Kong's equity markets experienced mixed fortunes during Thursday's trading session, with significant movements in the banking sector dominating investor attention following HSBC 's proposed acquisition of Hang Seng Bank.
The benchmark Hang Seng Index commenced trading with modest gains but subsequently declined 183 points to settle at 26,645, representing a 0.68 per cent decrease. The market's performance reflected cautious sentiment as mainland Chinese investors returned from an extended holiday period.
Banking stocks demonstrated particularly divergent trajectories following Wednesday's announcement of HSBC 's planned privatisation of Hang Seng Bank. HSBC Holdings witnessed substantial selling pressure, with shares declining 6.8 per cent as market participants assessed the financial implications of the proposed acquisition. Conversely, Hang Seng Bank shares surged 26.3 per cent in response to the HK$155 per share offer price, which represents a significant premium to its previous trading value.
Other financial institutions experienced varied fortunes, with Bank of East Asia advancing 5.2 per cent and Bank of China (Hong Kong) recording a 1.1 per cent gain. Insurance heavyweight AIA saw modest declines of 0.3 per cent, while Ping An Insurance retreated 0.9 per cent.
Technology shares generally trended downward, with industry leaders including Tencent, Alibaba, and Meituan all recording losses between 0.3 and 1.5 per cent. The sector's performance contributed to the broader market's subdued atmosphere amid ongoing concerns about global technology valuations. Trading volume reached HK$55 billion during the session.
